Golfing Legs Unveil Future Superstars: A Celebration of Chinese Golf Growth

As the world-class golf tournament, WGC-HSBC Champions marks its 15-year milestone in Shangh, global giants from the sport and rising young talent collaborated to highlight China's progress in golf. This year’s event, known for boasting one of the strongest fields outside a Major Championship, enabled HSBC - the title partner - to bring together elite golfers alongside promising young players, showcasing how far the sport has blossomed in China.

In partnership with WGC-HSBC Champions, HSBC orchestrated an extraordinary experience at the driving range by inviting world-class stars Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Justin Rose, Ian Poulter Ryder Cup leg, and local hero Li Haotong. The m was to surprise five exceptional Chinese juniors from across the nation who were selected for demonstrating outstanding achievements and remarkable progress during the 2019 season of the CGA-HSBC China Junior Golf Program.

Xander Schauffele, defing champion, encountered a stunning display by Xu Zilin, aged just 9 years old, at the hands of Ian Poulter; Beijing-based Chang Xihuan, an 11-year-old number one ranked youth and nine-time winner in HSBC Junior Championship events made Justin Rose immensely proud; Ni Zixin from Hubei, aged 12, showcased ball-striking skills that rivaled Rory McIlroy's own abilities. Tong Yang, a 9-year-old phenom from Shangh, caught the eye of world number one Rory McIlroy himself.

Rory McIlroy reflected on his experience:

Being part of WGC-HSBC Champions is always a special moment, knowing that every eye in China, and beyond, watches this event. It's incredibly rewarding to see golf grow here with such an enthusiastic fanbase, and inspiring future stars being nurtured through programs like CGA-HSBC China Junior Golf Program.

Rory McIlroy has previously finished top five three times at WGC-HSBC Champions.

Xander Schauffele shared his thoughts:

Winning WGC-HSBC Champions last year was unforgettable especially with my family watching from afar. Revisiting this year and connecting with young Chinese golfers is incredibly uplifting; we've seen a significant pool of talented players across the country, and I have no doubt some of these kids will be making global tournament headlines soon.
