Greg Norman is no stranger to dominating golf courses worldwide; he's been called the Great White Shark on green. Now, this World Golf Hall of Fame inductee and course designer has shifted his focus towards promoting his cherished sport across the globe. His eyes are currently set on China, a country with immense potential for growth - both for golf and those who indulge in it.
Norman has already designed courses within China's borders including KKou Golf Club in Xiamen and Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzhen. The latter holds the Guinness record for being the largest golf facility globally.
Two decades ago, China's golf scene was still nascent with fewer than a dozen courses existing nationwide by 1994 when Mission Hills and KKou clubs opened their doors. Now, there are over 600 such establishments across the country - solidifying its status as an international hotspot for golf enthusiasts.
In conversation with Norman at The Bluffs Ho Tram Strip in Vietnam, a course he designed, his subsequent journey was set towards China where he serves as the advisory coach to the Chinese National Golf Team and ds in identifying and cultivating young talent destined for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Greg Norman's vision is centered around the growth prospects of golfers in China. His enthusiasm stems from the potential impact doubling the number of global golfers could have on equipment manufacturing, tourism industry, among others.
When asked about developing players and courses within this vast territory, Norman stresses the need to approach it responsibly. He advises agnst the American way of sping huge su build extravagant courses that are costly to mntn annually and subsequently passed on as costs to members. Instead, he suggests creating sustnable courses with a focus on grassroots accessibility.
As China's golf association and government m to invest $3 billion in tourism development projects across the country, Norman sees this as an opportunity for growth, encouraging the preservation of natural landscapes and cultural heritage while developing new infrastructure.
