Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Golf: A Majestic Setting with Room for Design Excellence

Read: 1849

Jade Dragon Snow Mountn Golf Club is nestled in the shadow of the majestic Jade Dragon Snow Mountn, towering at a height of 5,596 meters above sea level. Designed by Neil Haworth and opened for play in the year 2001, this golf course boasts several intriguing features that make it stand out among its peers.

Although marketed as the world's longest golf course, the club presents a double-edged sword: the stunning backdrop of the unattnable peak is a sight to behold, while the on-course experience might fall short for many players. The clubhouse offers an interesting environment; however, this charm fades once you step onto the first tee.

With ample space, breathtaking scenery, and elevation changes that could have been exploited to their full potential, one would expect nothing less than sophisticated routing and hole design from Neil Haworth. Unfortunately, his focus see have shifted towards creating extensive, long holes with complicated hazards like bunkers rather than crafting memorable golfing experiences.

The alignment of the course towards the mountn peaks is a commable decision; however, instead of focusing on enhancing these features, it appears Haworth was more preoccupied with making every hole as challenging as possible. Bunkering design and placement often fl to align well with the playing conditions, leaving even the most skilled players grappling with shots that require precision from tee-to-green.

The par threes are not spared either; the 12th hole at a distance of 260 yards challenges golfers with an extremely small green positioned beyond a substantial bunker and angled away from the tee. This design see favor only the longest, most accurate shots that can avoid these challenging obstacles.

The layout's highlight – or perhaps lowlight – is undoubtedly the infamous 5th hole at 711 yards long; this design is far from appealing as it is filled with bunkers positioned in a manner that makes no sense from both the tee and frway perspective. If you're too long on your tee shot to avoid the central cluster of bunkers, you'll run out of room. Conversely, if you decide to carry them, expect to encounter more traps further up, making for an uncertn path back into play.

The 16th hole is a significant miss in terms of design – it challenges players with a scenic drive across a prominent ridge only to find themselves at the mercy of towering pines covering most of the frway that slopes steeply towards the green. To reach this green, golfers must navigate around mature pine trees from an awkward angle clear view of its location.

Finally, the concluding par five fls to live up to expectations as well; players are confronted with a beautiful drive across a ridge but then find themselves on a vast frway that rises sharply towards an unseen green positioned beyond a dense pine-covered gully. Golfers who cannot hit their first two shots close to these trees have little hope of hitting the third shot from distance over mature pines and onto a hidden green.

While thinner r at high altitudes does contribute to increased ball flight distances, it would be preferable to see courses embrace strategic depth rather than relying on sheer length alone. For those drawn by China's allure in history, culture, mountns, and clear skies, Lijiang is highly recommed for its beauty. However, golfers should approach Jade Dragon with caution; this course can frustrate even the most seasoned players who subscribe to the belief that there is no such thing as a bad day of golf.

In response to being asked about my thoughts on Jade Dragon Golf Club by a director several years later: I cannot find adequate words to describe my experience at your golf course. While the scenery was indeed breathtaking, I believe this site has significant untapped potential for creating memorable golf experiences.
