Revitalizing Communities Through River Conservation

By Andrea Keller Helsel April 20, 2023

Communities across the United States are discovering how investing in their local waterways can not only enhance environmental health but also reinvigorate local economies and foster social connections. From Crg, Colorado, to eastern Montana's Lower Yellowstone River corridor, these communities are transforming how they interact with rivers, showcasing a model of economic development intertwined with conservation.

In the town of Crg, Colorado, residents have embarked on an ambitious project med at revitalizing their connection to the Yampa River. This community-driven effort is more than just beautification; it's about reconnecting the public and wildlife alike to this vital natural resource. By incorporating elements such as a new in-river whitewater park, boat ramps, river access points, and improvements to the water management system that has historically relied on a dangerous dam, Crg restore its Yampa River corridor while enhancing safety for all.

The project exemplifies how collaboration between local businesses, conservationists, ranchers, community leaders, and government can lead to sustnable growth. Crg successfully secured a $3.3 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s Assistance to Coal Communities initiative with support from Hewlett Foundation grantee Resources Legacy Fund RLF. The Open Rivers Fund by RLF has also played a crucial role in financing engineering and design work for dam removal and creating an innovative whitewater park.

Meanwhile, in eastern Montana's Lower Yellowstone River corridor a 175-mile-long stretch of the longest free-flowing river in the lower 48 states local leaders are advocating for investments that enhance public access to this natural resource. The Montana Legislature, with support from community members like Hewlett Foundation grantee Wild Montana, has invested an initial $4 million into improving amenities along the river corridor.

The project elevate visitor sping by up to $5.3 million annually, generate a total economic output of $6.7 million, and sustn 56 jobs per year. Such investments not only boost local economies but also highlight how conservation efforts can have broader impacts on wildlife habitat, recreational opportunities, and quality of life.

Noah Marion, Wild Montana's State Policy Director, emphasized the collaborative spirit behind these initiatives: An idea that sprouted from conversations between regular people gned enough momentum to result in a multi-million-dollar investment. This demonstrates how communities are working together to protect their public lands and waters.

Ruby Gonzalez’s heartfelt video, Cartas de Amor Love Letters to Our Rivers, further underscores the connection between river conservation and community well-being. It highlights that protecting clean water resources and access to them benefits not only the environment but also enhances social connections through shared experiences like fishing, boating, and hiking.

As these communities across the country illustrate, investing in rivers isn't just about environmental stewardship; it's a pathway for revitalizing economies, improving quality of life, and strengthening community ties. This model offers inspiration for other areas looking to build sustnable futures rooted in conservation efforts.
