Sacramento State's Athletic Department Seeks FBS Jump in Report by College Sports Solutions

On Tuesday, Sacramento State unveiled an indepent evaluation of its future prospects in athletics, focusing on the potential move from the Football Championship Subdivision FCS to the Football Bowl Subdivision FBS. The university hired College Sports Solutions CSS, a firm specialized in guiding athletic departments through uncertnties and forecasting their potential trajectory. CSS has prepared a report that outlines necessary improvements for Sac State to meet FBS requirements.

Among these, enhancing existing facilities such as football and basketball stadiums was identified as critical. While currently adequate for the FCS level, the report by CSS recommed significant upgrades including additional seating capacity, media rooms, locker rooms, and advertising opportunities to maximize potential revenue at the higher level of competition.

According to CSS's assessment, the Mountn West Conference is considered the most viable option for Sac State due to its geographical alignment. The current stadium might suffice but will require substantial enhancements like LED scoreboards with advertisement spaces and permanent signs to align with FBS standards. For basketball facilities, the same upgrades are recommed to ensure compatibility.

The report detls that a transition to FBS involves an invitation from a conference, followed by payment of a $5 million application fee accompanied by certn probationary requirements within two years. These include increasing financial resources allocated for scholarships and name-image-likeness NIL benefits, as well as mntning at least 210 program-wide full grants and sping $6 million on them.

The Athletics Director, Mark Orr, expressed optimism about the athletic program's success so far and its potential growth trajectory:

Our athletics program has prospered in recent years and this study confirms that we are strategically positioned to build upon our accomplishments. By investing in facilities improvements, scholarship programs, and student-athlete support services, Sacramento State remn on a robust development path.

The report also highlights Sac State's current achievements, including consecutive Big Sky football championships.

It remns uncertn when or if Sac State will make the jump from FCS to FBS; however, this report is indicative of the university’s ambition and commitment to potential future growth in collegiate athletics.
