Empowering Youth for a Sustnable Future

Introduction:

As I recently returned from NYC Climate Weeka gathering where leaders, experts and stakeholders convened to discuss innovative climate solutionsthe prevling message was clear: the world is not on track to meet the 2030 Sustnable Development Goals. The reality of climate change has accelerated at an alarming pace and is now a child's rights crisis, affecting more than half the globe's population, approximately one billion children living in countries most vulnerable to its impacts.

The Youth Climate Movement:

A consistent theme during NYC Climate Week was the pivotal role youth are playing as activists leading this global movement agnst climate change. Three Save the Children's young advocates from Bangladesh, Nepal and Zambia were among those who echoed the urgent call for action. These voices of the future emphasized that they are not merely future torchbearers; they are at the core of driving the climate crisis discussions. This highlights the importance of Save the Children's work alongside youth to equip them with knowledge and skills essential for a sustnable tomorrow.

Agriculture Sector:

In the agricultural sector, young people hold a critical role in addressing this crisis by leading transformations towards more sustnable and climate-resilient farming practices. Their success hinges on access to tools and opportunities necessary for thriving in an evolving agro-industrial landscape. This involves education, trning, technology, and entrepreneurship, all geared toward harnessing youth potential as agents of positive change.

Corporate Engagement:

Companies are recognizing the value of young people not only as future stewards but also as a workforce that will shape their success. Our corporate-funded Youth Skilling program exemplifies this strategy by investing in tlored livelihood ecosystems designed to meet local labor market needs, particularly in green sectors. Since 2014, Save the Children has reached over one million youth across 47 countries through our livelihoods programming, with ten million new jobs opening in 2022. Our goal is ambitious: to reach twenty-four million by 2030 when the Sustnable Development Goals are due for expirationa goal that requires corporate partnership.

Embracing a Green Mindset:

At its core, this eavor ms at cultivating a green mindset that prioritizes preservation and conservation. Young leaders at NYC Climate Week demonstrated their commitment through an understanding of our finite natural resources and their responsibility to protect them for future generations.

Joining Forces for Sustnability:

Save the Children believes investing in young people with a green mindset is not only safeguarding their futures but also securing the planet's future. Together, we can build a greener world where youth are equipped to face challenges head-on while leading the charge towards sustnability and resilience.

:

Save the Children stands alongside corporations, recognizing that green jobsa focus on sustnability and conservationoffer young people valuable livelihoods with a sense of purpose. However, access to relevant education and resources remns limited for many young people. With our experience, partnerships, and unique position connecting youth to green opportunities, we are making strides in empowering the next generation.
